Demerit points and penalties

Do not drive after drinking alcohol or taking any drug or medication that may reduce your ability to drive (ON-RULE-085).

How points stay on your record

Demerit points stay on a driver’s record for two years from the date of the offence (ON-RULE-056).

A Level One or Two driver who accumulates nine or more points in two years will have the licence suspended for 60 days from surrender. After that novice-driver suspension, points on the record are reduced to four (ON-RULE-057, ON-RULE-092).

A fully licensed driver is warned at six points and reaches suspension at 15 points. The first full-licence suspension is 30 days from surrender (ON-RULE-091, ON-RULE-058).

Selected offences

• Failing to remain at the scene of a collision: 7 points (ON-RULE-059).
• Failing to stop for police: 7 points (ON-RULE-088).
• Careless driving: 6 points (ON-RULE-060).
• Exceeding the limit by 16 to 29 km/h: 3 points (ON-RULE-061).
• Driving while holding or using a hand-held wireless device: 3 points (ON-RULE-062).
• Following too closely: 4 points (ON-RULE-089).
• Failing to stop at a pedestrian crossover: 4 points (ON-RULE-090).
