The Ontario G1 Test: What to Expect

What is the G1?

G1 is Level One of Ontario’s graduated licensing. Completing the two-step process takes at least 20 months (ON-RULE-005).

Requirements

To enter Level One (G1), you must be at least 16, pass a vision test, and pass a knowledge test of the rules of the road and traffic signs (ON-RULE-004). Ontario residents must also hold a valid Ontario driver’s licence to drive (ON-RULE-001).

Test content

The written knowledge test may ask about seatbelts, traffic signs and lights, emergency vehicles, headlights, speed limits, freeways, streetcars and school buses, suspensions, demerit points, passing, collision reporting, sharing the road, and rules of the road (ON-RULE-068).

Format

Official sample knowledge questions use a four-option multiple-choice format (ON-RULE-093). The official exam bank is not published.

Mock tests on this site use 40 questions in two sections of 20, with 16 needed in each. Based on the widely reported exam format. The official question bank is not public.

G1 restrictions

• Blood-alcohol level must be zero (ON-RULE-007).
• You must not drive alone. A fully licensed accompanying driver sits in the front passenger seat (ON-RULE-008).
• You must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. (ON-RULE-012).
• 400-series highways over 80 km/h are off limits unless a driving instructor is with you (ON-RULE-011).
